Our People News: January 7, 2019

A business setback is no barrier to future success

Some people might be put off running a franchise following a previous business fail. But not David Thompson. The father of three from Perth faced a financial setback several years ago when another business he was involved in fell on tough times. However, David dusted himself off and took the hard lessons learnt into his next business venture – running numerous Red Rooster franchisees. Today the stores are all successful and growing rapidly. David shares what he learnt here.

Introducing David Thompson – Red Rooster Franchise Partner in Butler, Joondalup and Mindarie (WA)

David, tell us about your career to date?

I started off my career in my family business, which was a 24/7 convenience store. Afterwards, I owned two cafes and numerous convenience stores before I joined Red Rooster in 2015. I now have three stores in Perth (Butler, Joondalup, Mindarie) and employ 75 people.

So, what inspired you to become a Red Rooster franchisee?

The brand was just a no-brainer. I grew up with fond memories of the brand in Perth, where I’m from, and it is just so down-to-earth Australian. I think a lot of people tend to like Australian brands better than overseas ones, so Red Rooster was particularly appealing to me. The tenure provided with our business is something that I love and it provides an easy menu compared to the more complex ones you get at cafes.

What would you say has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

A few years ago, I was involved in a business that was in tough trading circumstances and wasn’t performing well. As a result, I lost a lot of money which was a tough pill to swallow. But the upside is that it’s now shaped how I run my business currently and has taught me that there is no room to be lax. I think it’s important to never give up when you run a business – no matter how many times you get knocked down, you just have to get up and keep trying. It’s about perseverance.

You already have three Red Rooster stores, are you interested in expanding further?

Yes absolutely! I’d like to grow my restaurant numbers in order to make my business really strong. I really do enjoy training people and seeing them grow in their roles – I think is essential for any successful franchisee. You also need to make sure that KPIs are being met and closely monitor those, otherwise things can easily blow out of control.

How do you see Red Rooster developing overall as a brand in the next few years?

Hopefully massively. I think there are huge opportunities with our new CEO Nick Keenan at the helm. I think he really has what it takes to take the brand to the next level and knows how to get us where we need to be.

What are your top tips for people interested in becoming Red Rooster franchisees?

Firstly, I’d recommend looking for something that’s been around for a while but that also has a future. It’s equally important to look for something that’s in a relevant industry. Food is always going to be relevant so that’s why Red Rooster in particular appealed to me.

Strong brand recognition and good locations

So you’d recommend Red Rooster as a franchise to buy into?

I definitely would. We have scale and recognition, plus good advertising to back the business up, particularly in comparison to other businesses I’ve been involved in – advertising really is so important. We also have strong brand recognition and good locations.

Do you participate in any local initiatives?

Yes, we do – the local community is very important to us. We have numerous sponsorships, including one called ‘Player of the Day’ for the local basketball club while also providing catering opportunities. We are always open to different ideas and suggestions and are more than happy to help out where we can.

Finally, what is your favourite item on the menu?

Our chips! They are delicious and without a doubt the best hot chips on the market. I’m proud to say we are miles ahead in this segment. I have three kids and they all love them.
